How often should a brand post on social media

Every new client asks this question in the first call. The answer they expect is a magic number. The answer that works is a cadence you can hold for six months without the quality slipping.
Posting daily with average content performs worse than posting three times a week with content people save and share. The algorithm on every major platform rewards engagement rate, and engagement rate drops fast when you publish filler to hit a quota.
Start from your capacity, not from what a competitor does. A solo founder can usually sustain three posts a week with one short video. A brand with a content team or an agency behind it can push to five or more without strain.
Whatever number you pick, hold it for eight weeks before judging. Audiences learn your rhythm and platforms reward accounts that behave predictably. Erratic bursts followed by silence are the single most common pattern we fix when taking over an account.
One caveat on stories and live formats. They sit outside the calendar maths because their shelf life is a day. Treat them as a bonus layer for warm audiences rather than a substitute for feed content.
If your team is stretched, cut frequency before you cut quality. The feed remembers a great post far longer than it notices a quiet Tuesday.
